INFO

Millefiori glasswork technique produces distinctive decorative patterns. The word Millefiori comes from two Italian words. Mille meaning (Thousand) and Fiori meaning (Flowers). So the technique is called thousand flowers. The patterns are produced by heating a bundle of thin glass rods of different colours until the rods fuse together. The rods are then stretched, cooled and then cut to produce small discs with flower like designs. The process has to be done with two people and quickly. The effect is much like a stick of rock.

This technique was started in Milano Italy in the 15th century but was started in the USA in about 1850. This style of work is now used in polymer clay, known these days as Fimo beads.
