Mother Of Pearl is the iridescent layer of material which forms the lining of mollusks. Mother Of Pearl is also called "NACRE". Abalone and pearl oysters are both types of Mother Of Pearl. M.O.P has several different natural colours but is also dyed eg. red, blue and green. Mollusks create M.O.P to protect themselves from bacterial infection and irritation from organic material which drifts into the shell. If this material irritates the mollusk enough a bump is formed which is the pearl!
Although obviously pearl is not a stone it is one of the birthstones for Gemini and Cancer.
